Bookies tip Herzog & de Meuron to win Stirling Prize

  • Comment

Bookmaker William Hill is predicting a second RIBA Stirling Prize victory for Herzog & de Meuron after making the practice’s Blavatnik School of Government favourite to win the 2016 award

The practice, which hasn’t been shortlisted for the prize since picking up the award for its Laban dance centre in Deptford in 2003, is the 3/1 frontrunner to take home this year’s accolade.

The jury behind the selection of the six finalists - chosen from the 46 RIBA National Award winners - said the Blavatnik School of Government took ’the traditional Oxford quad and [tore] up the rule book’.

William Hill thinks the other Oxford scheme on the shortlist, WilkinsonEyre’s Weston Library, is the most likely challenger for the award and has offered the AJ100 Building of the Year at a tempting 7/2.

However the bookmaker has little faith in Caruso St John’s Newport Street Gallery or Loyn & Co’s Outhouse in rural Gloucestershire to win the prize. The art gallery for Damien Hirst in Vauxhall and the partly subterranean house in the Forest of Dean are priced at 9/2 and 5/1 respectively. A house has never won the RIBA Striling Prize in its 20-year history.

The judging panel, which is chaired by Zaha Hadid Architects’ Patrik Schumacher, includes AHMM’s Paul Monaghan, Heneghan Peng co-founder Roisin Heneghan, Mike Hussey, founder of sponsor Almacantar, and artist Rachel Whiteread.

The winner of the award will be announced on 6 October during a ceremony at RIBA’s London HQ.
