Bloomberg named AJ100 Client of the Year

Awards aj100 201812

Judges said that Bloomberg’s £1 billion investment in its new London headquarters is a staggering commitment to design quality

Foster + Partners’ design achieved the highest-ever design stage BREEAM score awarded to an office development worldwide.

The practice describes the building as an embodiment of the collaborative culture and values of Bloomberg, defined and inspired by the vision and generosity of its founder, owner and chief executive, Michael Bloomberg.

As well as its sustainability ambitions, a key aspect of the project was Bloomberg’s desire for a scale of building more sensitive to the neighbouring historic buildings than previous proposals for the site. The result incorporated a covered arcade through the site, which reinstated a lost Roman road and created new public spaces at intersections with the surrounding streets.

As part of the project, Bloomberg commissioned seven artists to create site-specific pieces to animate both the interior and exterior, as well as incorporating a public contemporary gallery, Bloomberg Space. Bloomberg also restored the remains of the Roman Temple of Mithras on the site, commissioning exhibition designers and artists to enhance visitors’ experience of the ruins.

According to the architect, Bloomberg pushed the boundaries with its striving for excellence and innovation.

‘Rarely have we had the good fortune to work with such an inspiring, enlightened and supportive client, with a perspective that looks beyond the immediate boundaries of a project to exert a positive influence that is near- and far-reaching,’ said the practice.
