UCL Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment in London has been ranked the second best place in the world to study architecture, according to a respected report

The institution, which was also named the UK’s best architecture school by the AJ100 practices last year, came behind only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the table put together by higher education networking giant QS.

Universities are ranked by QS according to academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact, using surveys, analysis of citations and the impact of published work.

Professor Bob Sheil, director of The Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London, said he was ‘delighted’ by the recognition.

‘At the Bartlett we aim to challenge conventional divides between architecture, science, engineering and the arts,’ he said.

’This approach, combined with innovative research and education, along with state-of-the-art spaces and exceptional staff, helps ensure we can provide a unique multidisciplinary and diverse approach to the built environment.’

Manchester School of Architecture and the University of Cambridge also made the top 10, being ranked seventh and eighth respectively.

Professor Tom Jefferies, head of Manchester School of Architecture, said he was ‘exceptionally pleased’ with the result.

‘It is recognition of what we are doing, a combination of amazing teaching and research, and our dynamic and progressive relationship with global practices,’ he added.

Institutions in Holland, Switzerland, Italy and Singapore also made the top 10, along with Harvard University and the University of California.

The University of Sheffield came 30th.

More than 40 countries have establishments in the top 200 places to study building design, according to the report.
