Arup has revealed plans for a new football stadium for Italian team AC Milan
The new scheme will help redevelop the Portello area of the city, allowing the famous club to leave its current San Siro home which it shares with rivals Inter Milan.
Arup has been working with the Milan Polytechnic Architecture Department on the new stadium which will feature a movable roof, a hotel, sports college, restaurants and children’s playground.
Emilio Faroldi, professor of architectural technology at the Department of Architecture, Construction Engineering and Building Environment of the Polytechnic of Milansaid: ‘We approached the project developing the basic themes of this work: we have been talking about environmental sustainability, the concept of a smart urban arena that is easily reached by public transport, and is low impact. A stadium, also, that identifies itself more like a building, like a piece of the city, and not as a business machine to be activated exclusively for a sporting event once a week .
He added: ‘Scientific research, through a series of studies, tells us clearly that the role of arenas in Europe and in the world is gradually changing. Stadiums are no longer meant only as a place for sporting events, , but as a useful piece to reorder the urban outlook of a city, a neighbourhood.’
In a statement the football team said the plans had been inspired by the Emirates Stadium in London alongside Basel, Bilbao and Neuchatel’s stadiums.
The scheme is planned to complete in 2018.
