ArkleBoyce reveals plans for ‘small settlement’ in West Yorkshire

  • Comment

Emerging practice ArkleBoyce has submitted plans to create six homes in and around an 1880s villa in Sandal, West Yorkshire

The proposal will see the existing Woodthorpe Lodge, a non-designated heritage asset at the heart of the site south of Wakefield, converted and extended to house three new dwellings.

The 1,847m² scheme, described as ’a small settlement of architecturally designed dwellings’, also includes three new detached houses, which will be built on the land surrounding the lodge.

Subject to approval, the project could start on site this September.

Architect’s view

The layout is based on the principle of creating a small settlement of architecturally designed dwellings which address a central, organic centre to the site. The trees in the centre of the site create a natural focus around which the dwellings are loosely arranged. The wooded setting and green character of the site are to be preserved and enhanced.

Woodthorpe Lodge itself, which extends to more than 882m², is cleared of non-original additions and outbuildings. Internally the house is sensitively subdivided to retain the principal rooms, while two contemporary yet complementary extensions are added to the rear, in order to create three separate dwellings of a suitable size for today’s market.

The architectural approach derives from study and assessment of the existing Victorian lodge; it’s proportion, massing and, in particular, the rectilinear bay windows which characterise the principal elevation. All three new build houses have a central two-storey block with a pitched roof and a primary gable elevation visible on the approach to each dwelling. Each also features a flat-roofed secondary block which mirrors the architectural language of the Woodthorpe Lodge extensions.
