Architype has won planning permission for a colourful, community-led housing development on the outskirts of Bristol
Councillors granted planning permission for the Shaldon Road co-housing scheme in Lockleaze, which will include 49 affordable homes and two communal units.
The project is backed by Bristol Community Land Trust and United Communities Housing Association.
Architype said the steep, sloping site had been abandoned, was overgrown and lacked vehicle access.
It said the architectural language of its £6.7 million scheme had been influenced by design collaboration with future residents as well as the ‘famously colourful and varied Bristol vernacular’.
Properties will be self-finished by residents, with an opportunity to personalise façades.
Proposed sustainability features include mechanical ventilation with heat recovery units in every home, a combined heat and power network, photovoltaic tiles on rooftops and an air source heat pump to provide district heating and electricity.
Project architect Elly Deacon-Smith said: ‘We are delighted that this unique and innovative community scheme has been granted planning permission; this is a great result for both the local community and the city of Bristol.
‘We hope that the delivery of Shaldon Road co-housing will set a new benchmark nationally for low-cost, sustainable and affordable housing.’
A contractor is expected to be appointed imminently, with delivery of the completed units scheduled for spring 2019.
