Architype has submitted the planning application for a £3million Passivhaus church in Sheffield

The project will be the first new build Passivhaus church building in the UK.
Architype were commissioned in 2011 to carry out a feasibility study for a new building to replace the existing head quarter of Christ Church Central. The project has gone in for planning after a year-long programme of consultation with both the building users and the local community.
The new 1,114m² building is spread across three floors; with entrance spaces and a café on the ground floor, a worship area for up to 300 people on the first floor, and admin and study areas on the top floor.
The building uses natural materials, which the architects claim have been ‘inspired by the building’s industrial context’. Reclaimed Sheffield bricks are used at ground floor level, alongside a screen of sandblasted Reglit glass wrapping around the first floor, above this the second floor is clad in vertical timber boards set behind metal fins.
Key issues for the client included a need to accommodate a large number of people in the main hall, flexibility, providing a sustainable building in terms of energy use, maintenance, and materials, and a need to make the most of the city centre location by producing a welcoming building.
The façade to the building has been designed to encourage views out to the streets. The building creates a defined entrance using the fall of Fitzwilliam Street to create access.
The Passivhaus standard has been used to reduce energy use. The building will be naturally ventilated in the summer with natural daylight provided through large high level openings on the south facing façade.
Architype said: ‘Our aim is to produce a high quality design which embodies the message of Central, is an exemplar building in both low-energy, Passivhaus design and spatial quality, and is a positive addition to the centre of Sheffield.’
