Architype has received planning permission for its third Passivhaus school in Wolverhampton
The new Wilkinson Primary School will replace a 420 pupil school on the site which was destroyed by fire in October 2010.
According to the practice, which has already completed two Passivhaus schools for Wolverhampton City Council, new the building has a ‘clear, simple plan and an efficient form which reflect the school’s internal functions’.
The classrooms are clustered around shared central activity hubs, with the ground floor classrooms having direct access to the outdoors. Clerestory windows will bring natural daylight into the centre of the building and the north facing teaching areas.
Jonathan Hines, director at Architype said: ‘The design and contractor teams have worked closely together to learn the lessons gained during the design, construction, and occupation of the first two schools, and apply them in the optimisation of the design for Wilkinson Primary.
‘Many of the specific lessons we have learnt and applied included opting for manual controls wherever possible, greater use of BIM, design and construction workshops to pre-empt any site errors that could occur, and greater modulisation of external components, windows and doors.’
The building also signals a growth in the common use of the Passivhaus standard, which was specified in the client’s brief, requiring this energy standard over the use of BREEAM.
The scheme will be the practice’s fourth Passivhaus school in the UK.
