Proposals to redevelop parts of London’s Camden Lock Market have been drawn up by architects John McAslan & Partners and Greig & Stephenson
The scheme to create new performance, restaurant, retail and workshop space, includes the extension of the current Market Hall to incorporate the building that houses legendary live-music venue Dingwalls.
The plans also propose opening up the undercroft of the adjacent Grade II listed Interchange Warehouse Building with a development that would bring a covered canal wharf known as Dead Dog Basin into public use.
The Urban Market Company (UMC), which runs the market, said possible options for the basin area and vaults of the 1905 former railway building included a glass-encased restaurant and new retail space.
It said the proposals would see “the majority” of Camden Lock’s current buildings retained, “including all those facing Chalk Farm Road and Camden Lock Place”. However it conceded that the proposals would see “some later 20th Century buildings removed”.
A spokesman for the company declined to specify which buildings were earmarked for demolition – or the amount of new floorspace proposed for construction – ahead of public consultation events set to take place on July 18 and 19.
Katrina Larkin of UMC said the proposals were “vital” for the long-term viability of Camden Lock and would upgrade existing spaces and establish new ones for fashion shows, concerts, theatre and performance art.
“Dingwalls has historically provided a place for new acts and artists to build careers upon their originality and creativity in Camden,” she said.
“But as music and the creative industries evolve, so must Camden Lock to provide more flexible environments that provide a wider array of canvases for artists and performers.
“Venues now need to cater to music and culture in Camden Town, not just at night, but throughout the day, and in more dynamic configurations in terms of size, location, and experience.”
