[FIRST LOOK + DRAWINGS + DATA] London and Berlin-based KHBT has completed the refurbishment of this 1970s villa in Offenbach, Germany
The scheme near Frankfurt refurbished and extended an existing 1970s villa, adding an extra storey.
The internal space has been rearranged creating an internal triple height staircase, acting as a centrepiece for the house. According to practice founder Karsten Huneck, this open space acts as a ‘communication zone’ with private areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms clearly separated from it.
The base of the house remains as existing with exposed brickwork, and the new additions and surface treatments are expressed at the upper stories. The architects described this as giving the impressions of ‘the building appearing as a new contemporary structure resting on the existing base.’
The existing timber curtain wall has been replaced with a fully insulated wall with timber cladding, unify the façade treatment with the new folding roof structure. This façade was developed, designed, engineered, manufacturer and installed by the architects themselves.
The practice run by partners from the design studio OSA, have described the experimental nature of their work as being an underlying influence for this project.
Huneck, partner at both KHBT and OSA said: ‘Obviously the experimental and daring nature of OSA is overlaying all the works we are producing, for example for this house we proposed to build the façade ourselves. In fact we have been designing, engineering, manufacturing and installing it all ourselves and so it became rather a bespoke piece.’
