Allies & Morrison and DRDH scoop Antwerp tower contest

  • Comment

A team led by British practices Allies and Morrison and DRDH has won a competition for a 24-storey apartment and office tower in Antwerp, Belgium

Developer Triple Living chose the UK collaboration ahead of an international shortlist of practices which included Swedish star Johan Celsing, local firm Bovenbouw, the architects behind the Whitechapel Gallery revamp, Robbrecht en Daem, and Italian Stefano Boeri.

The project sits in the centre of Nieuw Zuid masterplan, an urban extension backed by Triple Living to the south of the city along the west bank of the River Scheldt.

The winning scheme features a four-storey office building next to the new tower which ‘addresses a new market square and the main urban boulevard that runs through the development’.

According to the practices, the main block will have a ‘façade of brick set behind a deep, trabeated structure of precast concrete elements’.

Commenting on the design, the jury said: ‘The use of high-quality materials and attention to detail gives the tower a solid, structured form with a modest and elegant silhouette. Seemingly simple, this is nonetheless precisely tailored to its urban location in the heart of the Nieuw Zuid plan.’

DRDH is already working on a number of schemes in Belgium, including the refurbishment of the historic Bourla Theatre, also in Antwerp (see AJ 05.07.16).

However, this project is the first in the country for Allies and Morrison. The AJ100 outfit commented that the scheme ‘adds to the practice’s growing experience in the design of residential towers, including a number currently on site in London’.
