Alison Brooks submits plans for King’s Cross tower scheme

Alison Brooks Architects has submitted plans for a 15,000m² residential scheme in London’s King’s Cross

The 158-home project, known in the masterplan as building S5, is described as a six-sided perimeter block split into a trio of buildings rising from four to 15 storeys.

Arranged around an internal courtyard, the project will create 98 homes for open market sale and 60 ‘affordable rent apartments’, 130m² of meeting and function spaces for residents and four ground-floor commercial units.

Landowner King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership (KCCLP) – which is headed by developer Argent – submitted the reserved matters application for the site overlooking Lewis Cubitt Park at the northern end of the huge development last week.

According to the Alison Brooks Architects, the scheme features an ‘array of arches’ with 38 of them used at the block’s base to create a 190m-long double-height street frontage.

The crown of the building also includes a band of quadratic Bezier arches which house the terraces to some of the bigger apartments.

Alison Brooks Architects was selected for the project following an invited competition in May 2016, with the developer praising the designs for their ’clever contemporary interpretation of historic architectural forms seen around King’s Cross’.

The practice is also working with Argent and Related Companies, one of the largest property companies in the US, on a major masterplan at Tottenham Hale with architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and Pollard Thomas Edwards.

There was once a great Foster master plan for Kings Cross. Look what we’ve ended up with!

  • So, does this signal the emergence of a fashion for rows of variegated arches, with those at the corners sliced off in mid-hop?
