AHR’s ‘Spine’ HQ for Royal College of Physicians approved

APPROVED: AHR's Spine building for the RCP's Liverpool outpost
  • Comment

Liverpool City Council has granted planning permission to AHR’s £35 million outpost of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) in Liverpool, known as the ‘Spine’

The 6,500m² office, which takes its name from a staircase on its north elevation said to resemble a human backbone, will be based in the city’s new Knowledge Quarter.

The AJ100 practice defeated an unnamed shortlist to win the prestigious commission.

The Spine will become a new centre of clinical excellence for the organisation with the remaining floors offering a range of workspaces. The scheme will also provide an internal ‘sky garden’, a restaurant and parking.

The commission comes 53 years after Denys Lasdun completed the College’s present Grade I-listed headquarters at St Andrews Place, overlooking Regent’s Park.

The studio will work with contractor Morgan Sindall – which landed the project through the North West Construction Hub framework – to deliver the landmark scheme by summer 2020.
