Aedas to masterplan Kazakh capital

Aedas is to design a green district in Astana in time for Expo 2017

The practice will develop a masterplan and preliminary feasibility study for the $300 million development in the Kazakh capital.

Aedas is working with Aecom on the 200,000m2 scheme, which is due to be built from 2014 to 2016.

It saw off competition from local firms and international names such as Archetype, Atkins and Miguel Saraiva & Associados.

Green Quarter - EXPO Village will include an administrative and business centre; residential areas; parks; and social facilities. All buildings will target LEED certification as the development focuses on sustainability.

Aedas said its winning designs were inspired by nature.

‘The cellular structure of a leaf provides the departure point for creating a masterplan using biomimetic principles, echoing the structure of living organisms at a macro and micro scale,’ it said in a statement.

Biodomes will link public spaces, providing sheltered arcades for circulating between buildings during the harsh winter months.

In October, AJ reported that US-based Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture had won the contest to design the flagship venue for Expo 2017 in Astana.
