ADP has submitted plans for a £14.8million residential development and visitor centre at the historic Fort Bovisand in Plymouth
The 6,700m² scheme includes refurbishing listed structures and adding new buildings to the scheduled ancient monument in Plymouth Sound - part of the South Hams Coastal Conservation Area.
Backed by Heritage Lottery funding, the proposals will see eight Victorian casemates restored as a multi-use visitor centre comprising exhibition space, learning hub and outdoor space for guided tours.
The scheme will also see new apartments, that ‘respond sensitively to the topography of the Upper Fort and historic listed setting’ built on the footprint of two towers that were demolished.
A new apartment building to the west of the site, designed to Passivhaus standards, will ’recede into hillside’. According to the architects, materials, colours and textures have been chosen to reduce visual impact.
The coastal landscape is also a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI). ADP Landscape will introduce nesting boxes, picnicking areas, a nature trail and an amphitheatre on the quayside for exhibitions and events.
ADP director Graham McRuvie said: ‘Fort Bovisand is a fascinating site to be involved with, and the combination of fortified structures, constant changes in level and the dramatic coastline has provided excellent design opportunities, all with the knowledge that the resulting development will be instrumental in preventing further decay of these important historic buildings.
’Key to the success of the design is working closely with the client, local authority and Historic England so that proposals can be developed that are clearly contemporary structures but seen in a sympathetic context with the historic buildings.’
