Adam Knibb wins go-ahead for cantilevered Oxford house

Adam Knibb Architects has won approval for this three-bedroom house east of Oxford town centre featuring a large Cor-ten-clad cantilever

The 180m² scheme, which will sit in the ’relatively unused’ garden of an existing house in Littleworth, will be built from prefabricated components.

Expected to start on site later this year, the house is set to complete in spring 2018.

Architect’s view

Arranged over three floors, including a basement level, the new dwelling acts as a striking modern addition to the streetscene, adding both aesthetic value and architectural interest to the area. Thorough analysis in the proposal’s materiality has been key to finalising the overall concept, with a solid slate mass acting as a base to a Cor-ten steel clad box that cantilevers above. This arrangement creates flexible living space while ensuring that views and a high provision of natural light can be enjoyed from all areas of the dwelling.

Internally, the proposal has a more traditional living arrangement, with the kitchen and open plan living/dining area located on the ground floor and the bedrooms and bathrooms above. The internal staircase in the main hall space downstairs allows access to both the first floor and the basement below, while also acting a centralised visual feature within the floor plan.

The basement space incorporates a boot room, carport and additional storage area, which can be accessed externally via a slope which leads to Kelly’s Road.
