Make Architects has unveiled further images of its self-funded proposals to expand Stansted airport
One of a growing gaggle of speculative ‘solutions’ for the UK’s aviation capacity problems which have emerged over the last year, the scheme by Ken Shuttleworth’s practice would see the Essex airport become a huge international hub.
The AJ100 outfit, which revealed its initial designs back in October, predicts the expansion could be delivered for £18 billion, making it ‘one of the most deliverable and affordable solutions on the table’. The practice is planning to present its vision to the Airports Commission.
Shuttleworth said: ‘Everyone now recognises the need for new airport capacity in order to maintain the UK’s position in the global economy.
‘The question remains as to where. The location should be such that it can serve the whole country efficiently for the next century. We’ve proved that Stansted is a viable option, deliverable, affordable and linking to central London in less than 30 minutes, crucially ensuring the distribution of growth and economic development to benefit the national population.’
Make claim its strategy for the airport - owned since Febrary 2013 by Manchester Airports Group (MAG) - will act as a catalyst for the Lea Valley and the Eastern Regions, providing up to £100 billion in investment.
The proposals include improving the existing infrastructure, and the practice has also looked at the viability of extending both Crossrail 1 and 2 to link with the airport.
The practice’s scheme is in competition with, among others, Fosters’ proposals for a four runway mega hub airport in the Thames Estuary, which will also be submitted to the Howard Davies-led investigation into UK airport capacity.
Make will submit its report to the Airports Commission in July.
The commission will make recommendations on how to address the UK’s current aviation capacity issues after the next election.
