Larraz, Beguiristain and Bergera unwrap playful Spanish nursery school

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS + DATA] Larraz, Beguiristain and Bergera have completed this colourful nursery school in Berriozar, Spain

The nursery’s childcare facilities are organised around three communal spaces, an internal ‘plaza’ at the heart of the building that acts as a space for the school’s common activities and two separate courtyards located at either end of the longitudinal plan.

The classrooms are each directly connected to both the central square and the playgrounds that are contained within the colourful lattice that wraps the entire building.

Unlike the chromatic exterior the interior spaces are designed to be ‘serene and neutral’ with natural light and ventilation provided by skylights

  • Love the coloured panelling, but other than that this seems an awfully brutal design for tiny children. Lots of hard surfaces to fall on and run into, sharp corners on fitted furniture, featureless corridors...and I can just imagine the accidents they'll have with the full height glass. And no colour, just white and concrete. Would I want to send my kids to such a sterile environment? No thanks.
