Kawneers sliding solutions top the scale

  • Comment

Sliding windows from architectural aluminium systems supplier Kawneer are proving just the tonic for health authorities in England and Wales. More than 1,000 of Kawneer’s latest AA®3110 horizontal sliding window, that maximises ventilation while minimising the risk of self-harming, have been specified by key architects in the healthcare market.

Several projects using this sliding solution are now complete, while others are nearing completion and three more are on site.

John Wilson, managing director of approved installer Polar (NE), worked closely with Kawneer on the AA®3110’s development and have already begun to install it on a number of sites.

“It represents a major step forward, both in product development and in market opportunities for us, taking Polar into a new era of expansion to meet future demand in our key sectors of health and education,” he said.

Kawneer’s AA®3110 window has anti-ligature features such as a wraparound gasket that breaks into harmless pieces when there is an attempt to remove it, together with a streamlined handle that cannot be used as a ligature point. Designed to ensure the safety of the user is paramount, it features easy-to-operate functions and key lockable restrictions in compliance with HTM55 and BS 8213 regulations.

As well as a concealed mechanism that enables the window to be locked open at 125mm, other safety features include anti-lift blocks so the sliding vents cannot be removed once they are installed, and options for glazing up to 33mm which allows for specialist safety or security glass.

The thermally-broken vertical sliding window AA®3610 is also eminently flexible and as suitable for the education sector as it is for healthcare. Compliant with the ventilation requirements of Document F, it gives market-leading weather performance, independently tested at the BRE to Class 9A (600Pa). It was one of the first vertical sliding windows to be independently security tested at the BRE (British Research Establishment) to BS 7950.

Excellent thermal properties are achieved by a unique polyamide break that is designed to give ultimate performance for smooth operation, weather resistance and thermal efficiency while the streamlined design offers increased light and air flow and a smooth, flat facade.

Total flexibility is achieved through a range of options varying from single and double sliding and fixed light to punch-out openings or composites. In addition, Kawneer’s AA®3610 has several unique features. The same size glass can be accommodated on both the sliding sash and fixed light which means improved aesthetics and light for designers.

Whether a sliding AA®3110 or AA®3610, a dedicated Kawneer support team can advise healthcare and education specifiers on the best solutions for the most demanding applications.
