Zaha to design second Serpentine Gallery

Zaha Hadid has been appointed to design a second home for the Serpentine Gallery, just yards away from its Kensington Gardens base in west London

The 880m² Serpentine Sackler Gallery will open in 2012, featuring a pavilion and a restaurant.

Further details of plans to refurbish the Grade II-listed ‘Magazine’ building - a former munitions store (pictured) - have yet to be revealed.

Julia Peyton-Jones, director and Hans Ulrich Obrist, co-director, of the Serpentine Gallery said: ‘We have been interested in the potential of the building for some time and how it could help us expand the range of what we do.

‘In these challenging times, we feared the opportunity would be lost. We are very grateful to our long-term friends for their very generous assistance, which has made it possible for us to create this exciting, new platform for the UK and beyond.’

The Dr Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation donation is the largest in the gallery’s history, allowing the exhibition space to double its Kensington Gardens footprint.

The project is part of a move by Royal Parks  to make better use of its buildings. Mark Camley, chief executive at the Royal Parks said: ‘We are delighted to bring this unique listed building into public use for the first time, providing an exciting new cultural destination for park visitors.’
