Zaha Hadid lined up for first UK housing scheme

Zaha Hadid Architects is understood to be behind a new housing project on the fringe of the City of London

The AJ has learned that the practice will team up with Hawkins\Brown on the scheme, which will replace the Guinness Trust Estate’s flats in Mansell Street.

The scheme is backed by the Guinness Partnership housing association and the Beetham Organisation – the property developer bankrolling the Foreign Office Architects (FOA)-designed Trinity EC3 office project north of the targeted development plot.

Although FOA’s proposal on the site next to Aldgate Bus Station secured planning permission in December 2007, the land was later sold on to a private developer. A neighbouring, never-published scheme by 3XN for Beetham also hit the rocks.

The 200-home proposal will see the existing Guinness Trust flats taken down and replaced with social housing by Hawkins\Brown. Hadid will design private, higher-end homes on the southern element.

Neither practice would comment on the project, which is still at pre-planning stage. But, it is believed, it has been welcomed by City of London planning officers.
