Work springs from Shanghai win for PDRc

London-based practice PDRc has won a major masterplanning competition for the regeneration of a riverside slice of Shanghai

The firm’s winning design, The Shanghai Ribbon of Life, will see it put together a continuous environmental corridor alongside the Suzhou River in the Chinese city.

Amenities including 20 museums and galleries will be linked by a network of water buses, water taxis and bicycle paths.

PDRc chief Peter Verity told the AJ there could be opportunities for UK firms on the design of individual buildings within the scheme.

‘That is possible,’ he said, adding that Western architects were seen as “good brands” in China.

‘Having won the competition we now have to go through the other shortlisted submissions with the Shanghai leadership and decide what we can implement from them.

‘Construction is due to start before the end of the year. It is one of the rewards and one of the frustrations of working in China that projects move very quickly. You do not have time to think.’

The Chinese built environment sector is wobbling slightly at present, with shares in property developers reported to have dropped almost 5 per cent on Wednesday 14 March.

‘The private sector is nervous,’ Verity said. ‘There is a lot of nervousness among the Chinese middle classes.’

More than 1.3million m³ of toxic sludge has been removed from the Suzhou River as Shanghai looks to rehabilitate the industrial waterway and its surrounds.
