Construction work on AHMM’s new retail, office and apartment building at 61 Oxford Street is nearing completion
The Zara store on the lower levels open last month and the finishing touches are currently being added to the remainder of the central London block.
The country’s third biggest practice began working on the eight-storey scheme, described as a ‘prominent corner beacon’, almost six years ago after winning a competition.
According to the AHMM, the building for Dukelease Properties and the BA Pensions Trust features an ‘undulating’ glass facade which ‘nods to the history of London’s special glazed shopfronts’.

AHMM wins planning for Oxford St scheme as profits soar
Buoyant AHMM has landed the go-ahead for this retail, office and apartment at 61 Oxford Street, in the heart of London’s main shopping district
The approval came as the now 160-strong outfit posted impressive, recession-defying figures.
According to AHMM’s latest accounts, the companies’ pre-tax profits rose from £138,000 to £843,000 - a leap of more than 500 per cent - with turnover increasing by 18 per cent to £12.4 million.
Among a raft of central London and the south-east projects keeping the practice busy is: the overhaul of the 1950s BBC Television Centre in Shepherd’s Bush; the £250 million redevelopment of the former EMI record factory in Hayes; the 20ha Silvertown Quays site in east London; and the new UK headquarters for Google close to King’s Cross.
The Oxford Street scheme, which was rubberstamped by Westminster City Council, will replace several existing buildings with ‘a striking and more singular replacement’ housing a four-storey shop, two floors of offices and six flats.
Clad in a ‘rippling skin’ of curved glass, the mixed-use development has been designed for Dukelease Properties and British Airways Pension Trust.
