van Heyningen and Haward Architects’ £20 million Rivergate Centre project at Barking Riverside has started on site
The neighbourhood centre is the first phase of a new square which will feature a school, nursery, church and health facilities.
The project aims to forge links between the existing Barking community and new residents moving into the 10,000-home Barking Riverside development.
Aiming for BREEAM Excellent rating the design features a green roof and is positioned to increase natural light and ventilation. The new centre will open in autumn 2011.
Meanwhile, Jestico + Whiles with Glenn Howells Architects have landed planning to build 950 homes at Countryside Properties’ nearby Fresh Wharf development. The project includes 2,000m² of retail and leisure space and 1,600m² of community space.
