The first strands of the Dow Chemical-sponsored Olympic wrap have been put in place at the Olympic Park

Last summer, Bhopal disaster campaigners have hit out at the decision to allow Dow Chemical to sponsor the Olympic Stadium wrap

Activists in India claimed Dow has links to the Bhopal chemical accident which allegedly killed over 3,000 people in 1984 should not be allowed to ‘detoxify’ its brand through Olympics sponsorship.

Satinath Sarangi of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action said: ‘Dow as sponsor of Olympics is like a dance on the graves of Bhopal gas victims’.

Stadium designer Populous welcomed news that the conglomerate was sponsoring construction of its £7 million Olympic Stadium wrap project.

Confirmation of the deal came after the AJ revealed the company would sponsor the banner.

At the time a spokesperson for LOCOG said: ‘Dow was appointed as the supplier of the wrap following a rigorous procurement process. All of our suppliers must work within our own sustainable sourcing code and reflect our values and sustainability requirements.’
