Work begins on contest-winning T-Pylon prototype

Construction has started on a prototype for the ‘next generation’ of pylons designed by Copenhagen-based Bystrup

Developed over the last 11 months by National Grid, Bystrup, and Danish steel firm DS SM, the competition-winning design has been built on a site in Denmark.

Made from uncoated steel, the pylon’s weathered appearance has been likened to the Angel of the North sculpture, and the design team is said to be considering using Corten steel for the final design.

The competition to decide the ‘next generation’ of pylons was won by Danish practice Bystrup in October 2011.

The Danes’ T-Pylon design was picked ahead of shortlisted schemes by fellow finalists Amanda Levete Architects, Gustafson Porter, Ian Ritchie Architects, New Town Studio and Knight Architects in the competition run by the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC), National Grid, and the RIBA.

The constructed pylon will now undergo a series of tests including simulating both climatic and structural loads.

National Grid has said that following this testing they hope the new design will be available for training use in the UK by the end of 2013. They have applied for planning permission to erect 6 test pylons on a site in Nottinghamshire.
