Woods Bagot scoops Baku airport job

[First look] Woods Bagot has been appointed to design a new airport terminal in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan

Unveiled at MIPIM last week, the ‘world-class’ building will be built at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport 30 kilometres north east of the city.

The project, which is being run out of the practice’s London office and has been designed with Buro Happold, includes an air traffic control tower, a ‘presidential building’ and the refurbishment of the airport’s existing buildings.

Azerbaijan Airlines commissioned Arup to masterplan the site.

In November, Woods Bagot landed a $600 million job to design the expansion of Perth International Airport Terminal in Australia.

James Berry of Woods Bagot said:  ‘The major investment in new terminals in both Perth and Baku reflects the booming economies in these regions.

‘In both cases it’s rewarding to be working with client teams who understand the value of good design and willing to make the investment necessary to deliver a world-class passenger experience.

‘To be considered above all other entries reflects the great efforts and tenacity of the teams involved in each pitch and signals Woods Bagot as a world leader in airport design.’

  • I believe that this article is incorrect. Woods Bagot have not been appointed to design the Airport but by the Contractor under a Design and Build Contract for the construction of the new terminal along with other associated buildings. The design of the new aiport terminal and the images that you have published have been prepared by Arup ILG.
