The City of London Corporation has granted planning consent for the Woods Bagot-designed 10 Trinity Square
Woods Bagot is working with US firm Thomas Enterprises on the £150 million project, which will see the Grade II listed site converted into a 121-bedroom hotel with spa and 30 apartments.
Rob Steul, principal at Woods Bagot said: ‘Thomas Enterprises and Woods Bagot have been working with English Heritage and the City of London to develop a design which removes unsympathetic sixties extensions and restores the central rotunda space to the building, which was lost during the Blitz. This generous central space will become the new heart of the building, and rival the scale of the Reading Room in the Great Court of the British Museum.’
The approval comes despite concerns from The Twentieth Century Society, which urged the City of London to reject the proposal arguing that ‘more appropriate approaches have not been considered by the owner and that the current proposals, especially the penthouses, make excessive and damaging demands on the building.’
As reported in the AJ, plans to transform the London landmark were unveiled in March.
Designed by Edwin Coopers, 10 Trinity Square, which was built between 1915 and 1922, was originally the headquarters of the Port of London Authority.
