Wood is not a fossil fuel, Martin

Letters

Martin Pawley (AJ 12.2.98) can enjoy his winter evenings beside his log fire with a clear conscience. Wood is not a fossil fuel. Indeed, it is the only renewable source of energy (apart from wind) that exists. Burn those logs, Martin. It's OK.

It also makes good environmental sense to use timber extensively in buildings. Wood is strong, light, durable, an excellent thermal insulator and, contrary to popular belief, safer than steel in fires since it burns slowly at a predictable rate. Being renewable, unlike concrete, steel and uPVC, wood is the ideal material for the environmentally aware architect.
