Chris Wilkinson Architects is to advise Ove Arup & Partners on bridge aesthetics for design of a railway viaduct with three stations in Hong Kong.
Each station on the 8.75km-long viaduct will have a transport interchange with residential or commercial developments above. Chris Wilkinson said his practice would advise only on the viaduct design; Hong Kong architect Rocco Design will work on the stations. 'It's complicated work,' said Wilkinson. 'The railway snakes through urban areas and needs careful design. We are advising on the architectural aspects of the bridge.'
The architect starts on the West Rail Tuen Long section of track at the beginning of May. The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation commissioned Arup's. It is the second big project in Hong Kong to go the engineer's way, and they are worth around £75 million in total. Ove Arup & Partners is also working on the detailed design of a depot for the Tseung Kwan O Extension, an underground rail system run by the mtr Corporation. A multi- storey residential development for around 50,000 people is planned for above the depot. The architect will be hk-based Liang Peddle Thorp Architects and Planners.
Ove Arup & Partners is setting up two offices in Thailand. One will monitor work on the Bangkok Mass Transit scheme. The other is a trade and investment support office allowing the firm to have a permanent resident in Thailand.
