Wilkinson Eyre's London cable car to open this month

Wilkinson Eyre’s £50.5 million Emirates Air Line cable car will carry its first passengers over the River Thames at the end of this month

Completed by project architect Aedas, the 1.1km crossing will see its first ‘flight’ take place from midday on Thursday 28 June.

Once fully operational, the high-profile wheelchair accessible transport system is expected to carry up to 2,500 people an hour at heights of up to 90 metres over the river below.

Connecting east London’s Royal Docks with the Millennium Dome, the river crossing will be open seven days a week and will cost adults from as little as £1.60 per single journey. Children under five will travel for free while the cable car’s 34 gondola cabins may transport two bicycles each.

Its terminals feature on London underground’s iconic tube maps and will be known as Emirates Greenwich Peninsula and Emirates Royal Docks respectively. The Dubai-based Emirates airline contributed £36 million towards the crossing as part of a ten year sponsorship deal.

London mayor Boris Johnson said: ‘On 28 June this spectacular new addition to London’s skyline will provide a much needed new river crossing in the east of our great city. It will open up access to jobs in the Royal Docks enterprise zone and attract businesses and investors to a previously under exploited area.

‘The Emirates Air Line is part of my plan to develop a package of new river crossings in east London and transform the surrounding area into a vibrant new metropolitan quarter that will attract new jobs, homes and enterprise.’

London’s transport commissioner Peter Hendy added: ‘Passengers will very soon get to experience this unique and exciting new addition to London’s transport network.

‘Londoners and visitors to the capital will be able to experience a direct and quick way of crossing the river whilst enjoying the fantastic views from the cabins. The Emirates Air Line is an amazing achievement for all of those involved, given the timescale they worked within from it being an initial idea to a completed mode of transport.’
