Wilkinson Eyre and Renzo Piano vie for Sydney skyscraper

Double Stirling Prize-winner Wilkinson Eyre is battling against Renzo Piano for a $1 billion ‘resort’ tower in Sydney

Chicago-based Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture and international giant KPF are also vying for the 235m-tall hotel tower scheme which will house 350 rooms, including 70 ‘opulent suites’ on the top floors as well as 100 luxury apartments, restaurants, shops a spa and casinos.

According to the newspaper The Australian, the six-star Crown Sydney building at Barangaroo will be the ‘most iconic building to be constructed in Sydney since the Opera House’.

The teams will submitted thier concepts for the 65-storey tower in April.

Construction work on the skyscraper has been set for 2014, subject to planning, with a scheduled opennig date in 2018.
