Whispering Graz

Next year's Cultural Capital of Europe will be Graz, capital of the Austrian province of Styria. 'We on the Graz 2003 team see it this way, ' says the brochure. 'Graz must not ignore its neighbours or any other foreign impulses. Graz must not fall into a coma of self-imposed provincialism. Graz must not confuse its memories with its future.' Still, as Peter Blundell Jones has often shown many times in The Architectural Review, Graz has plenty going for it, and next year should prove the point.

Peter Cook and Colin Fournier's Graz Kunsthaus is scheduled to open on 20 September 2003, and other buildings due to complete include Riegler Riewe's House of Literature and a new Stadthalle by Klaus Kada. There are exhibitions on 'Masterpieces of Styrian Modernism' and Joze Plecnik, while Zaha Hadid and Patrick Schumacher will present 'Latent Utopias' - 'visionary ideas of renowned architects as well as young teams'. A visit certainly seems in order. Just mind your foreign impulses when you go.
