I think all the proposals made in the consultation will come in, one way or another.
The CIOB fully supports the intention to further enable the Building Control system. For example, there is no great desire for Approved Documents (ADs) to be renamed, but we do support the proposal to merge and reduce the number of ADs and would also like to see the DCLG release electronic PDF versions, to allow the content to be utilised more effectively.
Some members felt that stringent management protocols for drawings etc. should be introduced to ensure consistency, and one respondent felt that ADs should be part of an online self-check system (with each converted into a series of tick boxes).
We also support development of procedural guidance and would go a stage further by suggesting developing a separate professional guide and a customer-focused guide. These could follow the format of the manual (last updated in 2001) and should be accessible and searchable online.
