Stride Treglown has won Britain’s highest Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM)-Outstanding rating of 89.12% for the design of its wedge-shaped Cardiff office.
When completed in April 2010, the open-plan studio design of the 500m² office complex will accommodate over 50 staff on two floors that are connected by an open-tread staircase.
The building’s wedge shape is conducive its orientation and site entrance arrangement, and has worked into the design sustainability, and low energy consumption.
With just 14.2kg CO2/m² a year, the emissions of Stride Treglown’s new office will be 55% lower than the Building Regulations stipulations.
It has achieved this by using a wood pellet biomass boiler for space and water heating and a small array of roof mounted photovoltaic, earning it a Grade A Energy Performance Certificate rating of 22.
Natural ventilation through the use of bms actuated window in the walls and roof further aid energy-efficiency. Water consumption too has been minimised through the design with the adoption of spray fittings, low water use showers and water closets and grey water recycling for toilets.
