The on-off story of the Jean Nouvel/Foster + Partners collaboration in the City of London looks like entertaining us this year as well as last
Having designed a hellzapoppin’ melange of formal and expressionistic on the huge office site at Walbrook, the team won planning permission from enthusiastic City planners on behalf of owner Legal & General, which promptly tried to sell the scheme on.
That all went wrong and now L&G has ordered site works to start, presumably so the permitted design will go ahead – if a new developer/owner is found. Alternatively a new austerity-era design could be commissioned. It’s an important site and will be a marker for the ongoing health of the property sector.
