Water experts Baca in running for Parisian jackpot

Emerging British practice Baca Architects is among three finalists vying to masterplan a major redevelopment on the bank of the river Seine

Baca’s proposal was selected by the Seine Amont Public Development Agency (EPA ORSA) for the redevelopment of Seine-Gare-Vitry – a brownfield site stretching from Vitry RER station to the river.

The 37 hectare site forms part of the larger Ardoines development – a 300 hectare site comprising Seine-Gare-Vitry and Gare Ardoines - a 47 hectare site in southern Paris.

Baca, whose experience with waterside locations includes three masterplanning projects in Holland, will work alongside French engineering firm EGIS and landscape architects Villes & Paysages.

Richard Barker of Baca Architects said: ‘The site faces many sustainable development constraints that are common challenges to other cities across the world,’ adding that the project ‘played to many of Baca’s key skills’.

More than 60 practices responded to EPA ORSA’s call for competitive proposals in April and three design teams have been chosen to draw initial plans for each of the two areas.

If selected, the project will be the firm’s first masterplanning scheme in France.
