Walters & Cohen lands £3.75m HLF boost for Portsmouth boathouse

Walters & Cohen’s restoration of Portsmouth’s historic Boathouse 4 has been awarded £3.75 million worth of Heritage Lottery Funding

The project for Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust transforms the iconic 1938 building into a new timber boatbuilding academy, exhibition space and café. The mezzanine level café overlooks the exhibition area and offers views of Portsmouth Harbour and nearby Gosport.

Originally built for building and restoring boats and submarines, the structure occupies a prominent site within the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard which is also home to Wilkinson Eyre’s recently opened £27 million Mary Rose museum.

Walters & Cohen’s design will see the building transformed into a new Boatbuilding and Heritage Skills Training Centre intended to uphold skills that would otherwise be lost.

Walters & Cohen director Michál Cohen said: ‘Walters & Cohen is proud to be part of the initiative to re-introduce traditional boatbuilding skills to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, and absolutely delighted the HLF has given its support to this project at Boathouse 4.’

The London-based practice landed the prestigious job following an invited competition last year and secured first-round HLF support last November. The project won planning permission in October and is expected to open to the public in April 2015.
