Designer David Metrevali has received funding for his prototype of a 'skyscraper rescue platform'. It is a rotor powered Vertical Take Off and Landing craft, designed to fly alongside skyscrapers and act as a lifeboat for those trapped beyond the reach of rescue ladders.

Metreveli had struggled with funding, but told New Scientist: 'Our prospects have started to change a little bit. Unfortunately it's only happened after the tragedy of 11 September.'

Niall McLaughlin Architects has won a competition to redesign part of Oxford Brookes University's School of Architecture (AJ 18.10.01). The design comprises a glazed box next to a remodelled school entrance. An illuminated wall displaying students' work will be situated alongside it. Upstairs will be a social space and display area covered by a glowing ceiling.
