Over 7 per cent of the City of London's land area is covered by open space, says the Corporation of London. Offices in the City account for 70 per cent of all floor space; and there were around 26.6 million visitors to the capital in 1997.

Regeneration specialists Urban Splash has seen its turnover rise from £200,000 in its first year, 1987, to £14 million, with expected profits of more than £3 million this year. Staff have been rewarded with a trip to see Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum.

Average annual maintenance expenditure for sports centres is £1700 per 100m2: £200 for redecorations; £700 for fabric upkeep; £800 for services maintenance. Laboratories topped bmi's Review of Maintenance Costs, at around £2400 a year upkeep costs.
