Enough housing to line both sides of a road stretching from London to Hawaii - 11,600km - is being planned for the South-east, says the Council for the Protection of Rural England. This amounts to 430km2 of countryside swallowed up by more 1.1 extra million homes recommendedby 2016.

The new Wembley stadium will generate £229 million of spending each year and provide £184 million to the local economy over 50 years. It will create £62 million in wages and profits across London. Just more than 2000 jobs will be created and £4 million will be paid in business rates a year.

British 'cybershoppers' will spend up to £8 billion a year on the web by 2004, says economic analyst Business Strategies. That will rise to £50 billion by 2010. About 4.8 million people shop online - 10 per cent of the population.
