The Lighthouse, Scotland's centre for architecture, design and the city, welcomed its 100,000th visitor this week. Experts said it would take eight months to reach that mark, but the centre has been open for three months.

Almost 200,000 extra homes could be built on greenfield sites in the South-east over the next 16 years if deputy prime minister John Prescott forced councils to accept his inspectors' recommendations, says Friends of the Earth.

Around 14,200 homes were started in Great Britain in August, 1000 up on a year ago. The detr said completions numbered 13,400 compared with 12,400 the previous year.

A Manpower survey has revealed that 28 per cent of employers in the building sector expect an increase in job levels with 10 per cent forecasting a drop. Confidence is below the national average.
