There were 61 million more journeys on the London Underground last year than in 1999.Seventeen per cent more people travelled by train and 35 percent more travelled by bus than four years ago.

Of the 144,000 dwellings started last year, more than 90 per cent were built by private enterprise and 9 per cent for registered social landlords.Only 200 were started for local authorities.

The number of dwelling construction start-ups in England in the three months to September 2000 varied from 1,700 in the North East to 6,000 in the South East.

Carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption and flaring of fossil fuels in 1999 were 0.0007 million metric tonnes of carbon equivalent (MMTCe) per square mile per year for the EU and 0.0004 MMTCe per square mile for the US; meaning the per unit area production in the EU is 75 per cent more than the US.
