RIBA London's chairwoman Valerie Owen Le Vaillant has thrown her weight behind plans to build three new Thames crossings for east London. Owen Le Vaillant has been appointed to the campaign group backing the initiative, London First, as an executive director, and will focus full-time on promoting the crossing campaign and exploiting the development potential in east London. The crossings include bridges linking Greenwich Peninsular and the Royal Docks and from Ilford and Bexley, and a rail tunnel at Woolwich. The bridges could improve connections for as many as two million people in east London and would give better access to at least 300ha of developable brownfield land. Chris Wilkinson of Wilkinson Eyre Architects has drawn up designs for the two bridges.
