Urban Splash to move into mass housing

Regeneration expert and urban developer Urban Splash is looking to diversify its portfolio with a move into mass house building

Speaking to the AJ on the Manchester stand at MIPIM, directors Tom Bloxham (pictured) and Nick Johnson said the move was inspired by the lack of liquidity in the market.

‘You don’t need the full funding in place to build houses, like we would with a scheme like Chips, you need the land, but then you can build in phases,’ said Johnson

Bloxham added the Manchester-based developer was well-placed to meet a growing gap in the housing market.

‘80 per cent of people don’t want to buy a new house. That shows how much of a problem there is with the current housing under development,’ he said.

Bloxham said if the company moved into housing, its space standards would be more generous than other house builders and it would offer unique, conceptually fresh, yet accessible designs.

‘It won’t look Victorian’, Bloxham said, but emphasised that they will find a style of house that people will want to buy.
