Urban Splash submits proposals for Irvine harbour

Developer Urban Splash, working with Edinburgh-based Reiach and Hall Architects, has submitted a planning application for the development of Irvine Harbour in North Ayrshire, Scotland

The 4.45ha site at Irvine, near Saltcoats, is earmarked for a mixed-use development featuring housing, leisure and business uses. In addition to the new-build programme, the existing coastal watchtower and the car park of the former ‘Big Idea’ science centre are set to be refurbished and redeveloped.

The design includes around 330 homes and approximately 2,800m² of business space. A ‘more active quayside’ will be created by placing new commercial units at ground level containing new cafés, restaurants, shops and offices.

Following the appointment of Urban Splash as development partner to the Irvine bay redevelopment agency in March 2008, community consultations took place in March and August 2009 before the outline planning proposal was prepared and submitted this week.

A response to the application is expected in February 2010. If successful the development is proposed to take around six years to complete.

Tom Bloxham, Chairman of Urban Splash said, ‘By focusing on quality architecture and creating a strong sense of place [we can] transform Irvine into a great place where people will want to live and work.’
