Of the top 50 profit-making architecture firms in 1993, only 10 are now in the current top 50, says Plimsoll Publishing. Within this group, average pre-tax profits have risen from 6 per cent in 1993 to 10 per cent in the latest year.

Arup Associates has beaten ten other proposals to develop the historic Bermondsey Square. Working with Urban Catalyst and the Atlantic group, the mixed-use scheme will provide upgraded facilities for the antiques market; offices; set-back, mainly glass flats; retail; a hotel; a 350- seat, three-screen public cinema; and a new public space. The market trading place will be preserved, although under new private control. The Arup scheme attracted 27 per cent of a public vote.
