Course focus: Design studio modules-Technical-Building Performance Modelling || Design studio: YES || Fees:£4,480/10,880 (EU/Overseas)
Course director: Benson Lau
Course founded: 2006
Duration: 1 year full-time; 2 years part-time
Intake: 25 students
Student profile: Various backgrounds; 80 per cent international
Distinctive feature: Studio-based programme encouraging an integrated environmental design approach. Design proposals are tested and refined using physical and computer-based simulation tools. The course combines a problem-solving approach with a project based approach, where technical and theoretical knowledge is well integrated.
Director comment: The student number has grown from 6 in the first year to 25 this year. The success of this course has attracted sponsorships from the building industry and Price & Myers Consulting Engineers has donated a prize for the best MArch Environmental Design student since 2008. Recently, a joint pilot project was set up between Nottingham University and Lathams Architects in Derbyshire to provide opportunities for our students to apply their environmental design knowledge and skills in the real practice environment.
Student comment: This course has allowed me to move away from the typical student approach of bolting on environmental strategies or technologies to designs in a clip art manner, toward a more deeply and inherently green approach to architectural solution making. Most crucially for me, the learning is based around key studio design projects, which promote a holistic approach and provide the vehicle within which specific strands of teaching (such as the use of dynamic simulation tools), can be related to design. Another element I found important was a focus not solely on the specific and quantifiable but the relation of these to the qualitative and the poetic.
