Under construction: 9 of the 10 tallest buildings in history

[Top 10 in pictures] Only Burj Khalifa will remain in the 10 tallest buildings by 2016 - and 9 out of the top 10 structures will be in Asia

According to the research by Emporis, a series of new super-tall towers will eclipse the existing buildings in the elite sky-high club. Incredibly the 10th highest building currently under construction (Busan Lotte Town Tower, South Korea at 510m) will be higher than the current second-tallest building in the world (Taipei 101 in Taiwan at 508m).

Nine out of these 10 future super-high skyscrapers are in Asia. While Burj Khalifa will remain the tallest building in the world (at 828m) the Middle East’s cloud-touching clutch of giants will be overtaken by China, which is building six of the 10 tallest skyscrapers, followed by South Korea which has two buildings in the future list.

Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) has designed the 648m-tall Ping An International Finance Center in Shenzhen with 116 floors. Once completed in 2015, it will be the world’s second tallest building. Northern China will be boasting the Goldin Finance 117 in Tianjin, CTF Tianjin Tower and the Dalian Greenland Center in the next four years.
South Korea will soon feature two 500m+ new skyscrapers in Seoul and Busan. In Saudi Arabia, the Makkah Clock Royal Tower is already topped out and overlooks Islam’s holiest place, the Kaaba.

The only 500m+ skyscraper currently under construction in the northern hemisphere is One World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan.

SOM and KPF are head to head in the race of building the tallest skyscrapers of the future – both companies have three projects that are currently under construction. Two projects currently on hold that may one day make the list are India Tower in Mumbai, with a planned 720m height, by Foster + Partners, and the Pentominium in Dubai, by Aedas, with a proposed height of 516m.
