UN Studio reveals Dutch theatre

  • Comment

UN Studio’s Theatre de Stoep has officially opened in the Dutch town of Spijkenisse

Arranged in ‘the form of a flower’ around a column-free central foyer, the 5,800m² municipal theatre contains two auditorium.

The main theatre is capable of seating up to 656 guests with the smaller hall accommodating 200.

A public café and restaurant are also placed in the foyer with an artist’s café, a VIP lounge, dressing rooms and offices backstage.

Architect’s view

Ben van Berkel, co-founder, UN Studio

In contrast to today’s mediatised culture, theatre offers the participatory experience of the live event, often appropriately referred to as ‘liveliness’: the ‘magic of live theatre’, understood as the strange, elusive energy between audience and performer, the community forged together and the momentary collaboration necessitated by the live event.
